12 Aug 2008To many it will probably come as a surprise that China is not already the “workshop of the world”. But according to a piece in yesterday’s Financial Times (FT) it is likely that China will take over from America as the world’s largest manufacturer sometime next year. China will account for about 17% of manufacturing output value added ($6.1 trillion) compared with 16% for America. This will end over a 100 years of American dominance. The exact figure is not quoted in the report but India is expected to remain way behind in this respect, despite often being mentioned in the same breath as China.
Today’s FT included a follow-up comment which argued the main challenge from China’s rise is likely to be environmental.
